    Smooth Sailing with Stormwater BMPs

Stormwater is quite literally water that comes from storms, or any other form of natural precipitation. The term also applies to water that originates with snowmelt or runoff water from overwatering that enters the stormwater system. Impervious surfaces such as concrete roads or metal roofs can repel water, preventing ground absorption. Water that does not get soaked into the ground becomes surface runoff, which either flows directly into waterways or is channeled into storm sewers.
Stormwater is a problem because of two major reasons. First, the volume and timing of runoff water can lead to floods. Excessive amounts of water can weaken the soil’s integrity, causing landslides and other devastating natural calamities. Many floods could have been prevented with effective planning of underground waterways and sewerage systems.

The other critical reason is related to potential contaminants that the water is carrying, such as bacteria and fecal particles. These contaminants can lead to a multitude of water borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever. That is why it is imperative that water from rain and other forms of precipitation is filtered and kept sanitary.
Because of the potential dangers brought about by excess precipitation, stormwater best management practices, or stormwater BMPs, have been implemented to control the effects of excess water. Stormwater BMPs are control measures taken to alleviate the effects to both the quantity and quality of urban runoff caused by land surface changes. Stormwater BMPs usually focus on water quality problems brought about by changes made to the land. They are designed to reduce water volume, peak flows, and pollution through infiltration, detention, and filtration or biological and chemical means.

When choosing the right stormwater BMP system, companies need to find a system that not only protects their business, but also protects the environment and the community from the harmful effects of stormwater runoff. They can choose to implement a treatment train, or a series of stormwater BMPs, in order to improve the drainage water quality.
There are two classifications of stormwater BMPs; structural and non-structural. Structural stormwater BMPs consists of infrastructure, such as dams and water filtration devices. Non-structural stormwater BMPs include abstract solutions to water care such as rules and company policies.
